History

Since 1971 the Breda Jazz Festival has grown into a magnificent four-day musical event appealing to a wide audience. The kick-off is on Ascension Day, at 13.00 on the Grote Markt. Four days later, on Sunday evening, the last notes are played.

Traditional jazz inside and outdoor stages with free concerts

In the early years the Turfschip, the former event hall at the Chasséveld, was the brilliant center point of the festival. Initially the outdoor concerts were located mainly on the Havermarkt and the Grote Markt. The festival organization has managed to create more and more outdoors stages, each with its own characteristics and jazz style.

Jazz festival with international musicians

During the first two decades the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival Breda focuses mainly on  jazz musicians who play traditional jazz from the period before 1940. American musicians like Dan Barrett, George Probert, Jim Goodwin and Tom Baker introduce swing in Breda. Since the early nineties the festival organization makes the choice to broaden the range of music and alongside traditional  jazz, other jazz-related styles are being programmed.

In addition to the relationship with American musicians, the contact with Japanese jazz soloists such as Eiji Hanaoka and Masato Kobayashi developed. The Breda Jazz Festival and the Kobe Jazz Street Festival in Japan have a special friendly relationship. Since 1998, on the last day of the festival, a promising jazz musician receives the Kobe Jazz Street Award. The award is an invitation to perform during the Kobe Jazz Street Festival that same year

Broad programming

When the Breda Jazz Festival goes through a very difficult period in 1999, both financially as well as on the organisational level, the festival chooses a different approach with a completely new board. Stichting  Breda Jazz Festival wants to be a festival that is appealing to a wide audience, with an extensive outdoor program and special indoor concerts. Fixed and popular components of the program are: Duo Special at The Avenue, Gospel Concert at the Grote Kerk  and the Festival Surprise Bands. Alongside the variety of all kinds of different jazz styles in the program, there is still space and attention for traditional jazz.
